Best of the 80′s
June 4, 2008 by: Allen Sanford

The other day I received one of those “pass it around emails”, as I call them, now I usually don’t read these things, but this one brought back a child hood memory or two just by reading the subject line “You Know You Grew Up In the 80′s if”. After reading this “pass it around email” I was laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair. This email got me to thinking just what were the best memories I have from the eights, … the Rubik’s Cube, The Karate Kid, Van Halen, Murder, She Wrote, or Pac-Man … Thus is born my “Best of the 80s” list of everything from movies to hair styles.
Hair Dos
I am going to go out on a limb here but I think most people are probably thinking “big hair” right about now. It is very difficult to think about the 80′s and not think about big hair. So here is my hair do list.
- Big Hair a.k.a. hair bands, hair metal and poodle rock
- The Jheri Curl
- Feathered Hair
- A Flock of Seagulls Do
- Multicolored Hair
- Punk Hair Style
- The Mullet
- The rattail
Music
Music is probably the second thing one thinks about from the 80′s and is also the most influential part of the 80′s. There is so much good music which comes out of the 80′s that it has to be hard to pick the best of the best here but I am going to give it a try. I have decided to stick with the most notable singers and groups from the 80′s (in no particular order)
- Madonna
- Prince
- Amy Grant
- Whitney Houston
- Weird Al Yankovic
- Led Zeppelin
- Michael Jackson
- Kenny Rogers
- U2
- R.E.M
- Metallica
- John Mellencamp
Now I know some of you are saying I can’t believe it didn’t put so and so on that list. Well these are just the ones I think stand out above the others during the 80′s, remember some of those bands you are thinking about preformed during the 80′s but were made popular by either their 70′s or 90′s music so don’t get to upset. If you can convince me I will listen to pleas to add other though (you must overwhelmingly convince me though).
Television
Television in the 80′s brought fourth many dramatic series and hit sitcoms into our homes. Again I know if you people know where I live eggs will be hitting my door in the morning for leaving out some ones favorite show but …, this list is what I feel is the cream of the crop or were just synonymous with the 80′s.
Movies
Movies in the 80′s, o Lord, I can’t even pick so I am gonna wimp out here and just name the top box office movies from the 80′s.
- E.T the Extra-Terrestrial
- Return of the Jedi
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
- Batman
- Rain Man
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit
- Back to the Future
- Top Gun
Now I am going to get my self in trouble here, I am gonna slip in a few of my favorites; The Goonies, Ghostbusters, and who could forget The Karate Kid “Wax on … Wax off”.
Video Games
I will keep this short because technically video game are a 70′s thing but there were some notable games in th 80′s thus we have this list.
- Pac-Man
- Super Mario Bros (can we ever forget the Nintendo)
- Atari
- Commodore 64 (The home PC makes a huge leap forward)
- Amiga (Another huge leap for the home PC)
I hope this trip down memory lane was as good for you as it was me. This is the part were we talk about the unmentionables so I would advise you to ask your kids to not read any further, sike.
